One in five Canadians will experience mental health issues during their lifetime, and seven million Canadians will need professional assistance

More than one thousand individuals access Causeway’s programs and services every year.

The principal funding for Causeway comes from government, however this funding can be unpredictable. Donations from individuals like you are vital to maintain the breadth of programs offered by Causeway Work Centre, expand services as demands increase, and adapt them as needs change.

Chris’ Story

Chris came to Causeway back in 2008, ready to confront his substance abuse problem and find healthier ways to cope with his mental illness.

“I just needed someone to give me a chance,” says Chris. “For me, Causeway was that chance.”

Causeway helped Chris find work with Causeway’s Needle Hunters, a team that collects drug-use paraphernalia from city streets and parks. Chris sees his work as a way to give back to the community.

Recently, Chris was served with a devastating setback: he was diagnosed with cancer for a second time. Treatment sessions prevented him from completing his diploma in Office Administration last semester. Far from being defeated, Chris is repeating the full course load this semester, beating the odds in order to achieve his goal.

You are part of Chris’ success. Your support makes stories like Chris’ possible.

Gift for the Future
“Leaving a gift to Causeway in our will allows us to take care of our family first, but still reduce future estate taxes and create a legacy to help those suffering from mental illness. It is important to us that we’ll be making a gift that will far exceed what we had ever thought was possible during our lifetimes.

We chose to make our gift to the Causeway Foundation Endowment Fund at the Community Foundation of Ottawa because it’s comforting to know that the money we donate will exist in perpetuity, and the income on that fund will provide a steady source of support to a cause that is very close to our hearts.”

~ Jeff and Leah Eustace, Ottawa

Making a Bequest
A bequest through your will allows you to provide a future gift to Causeway without affecting your current needs. To make a bequest, you do not have to rewrite your existing will. Simply ask your lawyer to add a codicil designating “Causeway Foundation” as a beneficiary. Your estate will receive a tax credit for the full amount given.

A bequest can be for a stated percentage of your estate, a specific dollar amount, a percentage of the remainder of your estate after other needs have been met (also called a residual bequest), or a share of your estate after your other beneficiaries have died (called a contingent bequest).

You can choose to name the Causeway Foundation Endowment Fund (housed with the Community Foundation of Ottawa) as the beneficiary of your gift.

Although bequests are the most common way to leave a legacy to charity, there are other ways as well:

  • Gifts of life insurance: you can name Causeway as the beneficiary of either an existing policy, or a new one.
  • Charitable gift annuities: gift annuities are a wonderful way to provide a significant gift, while ensuring that you will have a steady source of income for life.
  • Gifts to the endowment: which is held by the Community Foundation of Ottawa, are invested and the income produced annually is directed toward the programs and services of Causeway Work Centre. The principal itself is never spent and continues to fund Causeway Work Centre’s priorities year after year.

The Benefits of Endowed Gifts
Making a gift to Causeway’s Endowment is a wonderful way for you to create a lasting legacy of support.

For endowment gifts made during your lifetime you will receive a charitable donation receipt for the full amount of your gift.

Endowment gifts made through a bequest offer special tax benefits to your estate.

How Endowed Gifts Benefit Causeway
Your endowed gifts provide Causeway with a reliable, predictable income stream to help us plan for the future and bridge the gap between government funding and our client’s needs.

No matter how you decide to leave your legacy, we recommend that you discuss your plans with your family and a financial advisor.
