Causeway’s social business, Good Nature Groundskeeping (GNG), was awarded Employer of the Year at the Celebration of People awards this past December. The Employer of the Year award goes to a business that promotes inclusivity in its hiring practices and workplace policies. Despite stiff competition from high profile companies, including a very large, national chain store, Good Nature Groundskeeping prevailed and brought home the hardware.
While most of GNG’s staff preferred to remain modestly out of the spotlight, operations manager Dave Segaert exchanged his work clothes for a suit and took the stage to accept the award. Segaert expressed GNG’s gratitude for the award. “It’s always nice for a business to be recognized for doing something truly worthwhile for the community,” he said.
As a social enterprise, GNG operates with the double bottom line of “people and profit.” The business offers residential and commercial grounds-keeping services while employing a large and dedicate crew of employees who face life challenges such as mental health illness, and or, addiction issues.
Segaert explained that GNG couldn’t exist without its parent company Causeway. “Causeway is committed to their four social enterprises, as well as to helping other social enterprises across Ottawa. Causeway’s social enterprises have a big impact on a great number of people’s lives in this city.”
The Celebration of People Awards was created by Citizen Advocacy to acknowledge remarkable accomplishments made both by people with disabilities, as well as organizations and businesses that help them to participate fully in their communities. The ceremony takes place each year on December 3rd, the date designated by the United Nations as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
