October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month
National Disability Employment Awareness Month aims to increase public awareness of the positive impact that people with disabilities have when they are included in the workforce. In Canada, 22% of people have at least one disability. To put that into perspective, that is over 6.2 million people. People with disabilities who are of working age have only a 59% employment rate compared to 80% for people without disabilities (Statistics Canada, 2017). People with disabilities represent a large untapped pool of talent, skills, and experience that can enrich workplaces. When people are given the chance to contribute through work, we are actively building stronger communities.
This month, we are helping to spread awareness of disability employment through our local community. We’re partnering with local businesses to promote inclusive hiring and talking about the positive impact it has on everyone. When we work with an employer or business to diversify their workforce by hiring our clients, we are showing them how inclusive communities work.
Look for our posters in the Hintonburg neighbourhood and join in on the conversation about employment, accessibility, strength in diversity, and disability.
