Spokes for Folks

Have you ever wondered just how much a difference a simple bicycle could make in your life? It can help you go grocery shopping, pick up medication, or even get to a job interview.

What if I told you that you could contribute to meaningful employment opportunities and give someone access to healthy, dependable transportation, all by donating to help fix bikes?

Well, with Cycle Salvation’s initiative, Spokes for Folks, you can do just that!

Spokes for Folks is a community campaign that restores old bikes, breaks down barriers to employment, and provides bicycles to people who need them. This campaign is an opportunity for Cycle Salvation to refurbish and donate at least 30 bikes to people who need them through community partnerships with organizations, such as Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization (OCISO).

Over the years, Cycle Salvation has noticed two barriers to ultimately achieving their triple bottom line: people, profit, planet.

  1. First, they often receive donation requests from other wonderful local organizations, asking for bicycles for their clients. Although everyone at Cycle Salvation would love to support these requests, they’ve never been in the position to provide donated bikes to people in our community.
  2. And the second, they receive many donated bicycles which are, unfortunately, too expensive to refurbish. Despite some of these bikes being just on the edge of possibility, they are forced to use them for parts before recycling any left-over bits properly.

Their goal is to raise $7,500 before October 31st to cover the cost of refurbishing 30 bicycles. This includes parts and labour, providing more work opportunities for Causeway clients working at Cycle Salvation. Once the bicycles are all fixed up, they will donate them to people in our community who need them.

An anonymous donor has offered to match the first $1,200 donated towards the total goal. So by donating today, you’re doubling your impact!

How your donation will help…

Cycle Salvation's cost breakdown of refurbishing a bike.
$10 bell and reflector installation
$15 flat repair
$25 brake adjustment
$50 seat, handlebar grip and pedals
$100 wheels and tires replacement
$150 shifter and derailleur installation, new chain

On average, bikes cost about $250 to refurbish, so, with your help, Cycle Salvation can restore at least 30 bikes and donate them to those in need in our community.

Every dollar donated to this campaign will make a direct impact on our community. With your help, not only will 30 people in the community directly benefit from reliable transportation, but the team at Cycle Salvation will benefit from more opportunities to work, learn, and grow.
